Sean McCabe creates idealistic type design

Sean McCabe uses the kind of sayings that sound corny in real life, but when transformed into hand drawn type design seem inspired and beautiful. Put aside your cynicism friends, this American designer has mad skills.

Based in San Antonio, McCabe loved typography before he even realised what it was. As a kid he would draw letters on his homework and felt like a bit of a weirdo for caring so much about the "beautiful shapes and curves" of words. But lo and behold the internet showed him that what he was doing was a legitimate profession, and thus the psychologist was unnecessary.

JR - The Wrinkles of the City - La Havana

In May 2012, JR collaborates with Cuban-American artist José Parlá on the latest iteration of The Wrinkles of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings.

Parlá’s markings echo the distressed surfaces of the walls he inscribes, and offer commentary on the lives of Cuba’s elders; together, JR and Parlá’s murals marvelously animate a city whose walls are otherwise adorned only by images of its leaders.

Pitchfork's Soundplay Cut Copy Game

Pitchfork's Soundplay is an interactive program focused on the intersections of music, gaming, and technology. In conjunction with Intel, Pitchfork has commissioned some of the most innovative game developers working today to create new, original games inspired by songs we love. These games don't just use music as a soundtrack; their scenes, characters, and settings are all driven by the song.

The first two games, launched last month, were Jake Elliott's game inspired by M83's "Intro" and Santa Ragione's game inspired by Matthew Dear's "Street Song". Today, Soundplay is pleased to introduce Bennett Foddy's "Sun God" game, inspired by Cut Copy's Zonoscope song of the same name.

"Sun God" is an experiment in cooperative dancing for two players, or one player with two hands. Two mysterious people haul each other up a pulsating hill, capturing glowing embers between twin trails of light. The hypnotic beats of Cut Copy's titular song control the light and motion of this blooming cathode-ray glitchscape. Play it here.

RDNS Reflections wins an FWA Award!

Wow… Lava received a particular high accolade this week, being judged for the Site of the Day Award by the FWA. Whilst this is only for one single day, to put this in context, consider the following. Favourite Website Awards (FWA) was established in May 2000, to recognise the latest and best cutting edge creativity. FWA was named the number 1 web award in the world, beating the likes of YouTube and the Webbys, in the Chicago Tribune's first World Wide Web Awards Award 2007, in which they "consider the scores of sites vying to become to Internet excellence what Oscar is to film excellence." FWA is the most visited website award program in the history of the internet, with over 100 million site visits as of August 2010 and an estimated additional 45 million per year. Lava has long aspired to win an FWA Award, so this is a huge landmark in our history, especially on top of the recent CREATE 2011 and AIMIA Awards!
