The Brief
Australian-born music conductor Michael Woods came to Lava wanting showpiece site, geared for a worldwide audience. The site needed to reflect Michael’s bio and repertoire in Classical, with a specialisation in Cross-over Pops. A focus was to keep the site current, via an easily updatable News section, and to fully utilise rich media in the form of video footage, captured when performing, along with photos from his travels.
Lava was thrilled to undertake this project. Whilst the size and technical specification is relatively straightforward, we saw terrific creative scope for a highly creative aesthetic approach, as well as some fabulous rich media content that reflects Michael in full flight!
Lava’s Solution
Drawing inspiration from European classic chic, Lava used a predominantly black and white palette with dashes of bright colour symbolising Woods' specialisation in cross-over pops. The concept for the design is based around the photos Michael takes while touring around Europe. They give an intimate photojournalistic account - from reading scores on trains, to conducting big orchestras in grand concert halls including Franzosische Dom in Berlin. These photos, laid out haphazardly on the homepage, each becomes one of the changing background images as you navigate through the site.
Lava used a simple 7 section menu structure, with a fairly conventional and simplistic approach used to presented Michael’s bio (About), latest News and Repertoire. However, a significant custom approach was used for the Gallery, which includes images (photos) and video’s showcasing Michael’s travels and performances. Crucially, Michael is able to easily update and maintain this site content, via the Lava CMS. This means the site is suited to both new and repeat visitors, and is always current.
Despite its small nature, the site stands tall in Lava’s folio of works. We thank Michael for his openness to a highly visual and creative site, and commitment to sourcing such interesting content that provides a window into his fascinating career and world!
