The Brief

Lava has been itching to get our hands on a fully Flash site. So we were thrilled when Travis de Clifford, our good friend and one of Melbourne’s leading high-end photographers, approached us for a full redevelopment of his web presence.

Travis wanted a folio based website, with an aesthetic to suit his style and image. The focus of the site is to really showcase his work, and his overall appreciation of great visuals and movement. The site needs to act as a marketing tool and reference point for current and prospective clients. Travis also wanted a method to easily update the site photos, so he can keep it current.

Lava’s Solution

We used minimal design elements, including a transparent floating menu, to keep the focus on the photos within. The colour palette consists of shades of charcoal with red as a highlight. This plays off beautifully with the photos, creating a mysterious and sexy mood. A subtle numbering system was used in the menu, as a nod to shutter speed conventions.

A key decision in development was to use full screen photos. Through careful planning and some fancy coding, we have achieved this whilst balancing the need to retain a high resolution (quality of the photos), but also keeping the site fast to load. For example, the site preloads all its images.

Lava’s team provided Travis with a method of updating his photos in-house.
